After listening to legislators, lawmen and physicians talk Monday about the difficulties of policing "pill mills," a mother shared the horror of burying her son after an overdose.

Richard Perry Jr. died at age 21 after struggling with an addiction to prescription drugs.

"The tears just flowed covering it," Karen Perry said about hugging her son's casket seven years ago. "I wanted so desperately to see and touch my son one more time. … There's nothing that we would not have done to save our son.more......

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on February 12, 2010

Millions of Floridians take prescription medication to reduce the effects of countless medical conditions. Pharmaceutical companies spend billions in marketing this or that drug in magazines, television, billboards and other outlets telling consumers how effective the drug is at alleviating a wide range of symptoms. But a glance at the front page of any newspaper will tell you that these prescriptions are not always safe. This Orlando Sentinel article sheds light on how dangerous some of these drugs can be.

A recent report conducted on drug-related deaths in Florida indicated that more fatalities occur from people taking prescription medication each year than from heroin, cocaine and other illegal drugs. During the first half of 2009, oxycodone, Xanax, Valium and methadone caused the most medication-related deaths, according to the Florida Medical Examiners Commission. Oxycodone is a painkiller frequently prescribed for everything from broken bones to dental surgery to back pain and many other ailments and conditions. Valium and Xanax are well-known anti-anxiety medications. Methadone has been used for decades to treat heroin addiction.

The Commission found that oxycodone was the cause of 23 fatalities in the Orlando metropolitan area alone, with methadone claiming another 15 lives in and around Orlando. These drugs have been cited as the cause of even more deaths in St. Petersburg and other Florida cities. The Commission found that while communities in Central Florida lagged behind other area for drug-related deaths, the number of fatalities was a huge concern and ways to address the problem are being discussed.more....

Prescription drug monitoring system bill that passed

When I first herd this Bill had passed I was over Joyed but when found out some it flaws I had to make a stand .
I am not saying I agonist it I am just saying more changes need to be made . Like the 15 day waiting period before information gets put in the system and the manipulation with fake ids that can be used . thier was a similar bill that would not have these problems including less of chance of getting hacked into + less of chance being manipulated . I know something is better than nothing but I am in this to save lives and I dont think this is going to cut it .
so I am sorry if I offended anyone with being out spoken about this but I am not sorry for telling the truth
This is not HARMDs or any other organization opinion its my personal opinion . I will not sell out. I will not let my brothers death be in vein .

Heather Bell

I will continue my cause that has been laid in heart by God.
I will continue to bring the truth to table no matter who likes it.

A Prayer For God’s Power

But as many as received him, to them gave he
power. —John 1:12

God, help me to know that nothing can defeat
me if I keep myself humbly in contact with
You. Grant me the greatness of soul to confront my
problems intelligently and courageously. For this I
thank You. Amen.

Maine's Rx drug woes
Safe and secure administration, disposal, are key

By Ron McAllister

It is an iconic image: the skull and crossbones within a black border. The words are stark and to the point: "DANGER POISON, harmful or fatal if swallowed or inhaled." Thinking about poisoning, your mind might go immediately to the scenario of a toddler unknowingly drinking antifreeze or a household cleanser and being rushed to the emergency room. But the fact is, the most frequent sources of poisoning deaths in this country do not carry iconic images.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 95 percent of unintentional poisoning deaths in this country are caused by overdoses of pain medications or other narcotics. And although poisoning was once a leading cause of death among children, today the death rate from poisoning in children less than six years old is small. Adults are far more likely to die from poisoning than are children.more...
